Media Release: School Holiday fun!

Published by Alex Makin on Wednesday 13th of August, 2008

Make the most of these school holidays at Council’s Spring Teenage Holiday Program at EV’s Youth Centre from Monday 22 September until Friday 3 October 2008.

Council’s Youth Services have organised a great program for young people between 12 to 16 years of age, full of activities that will ensure that these school holidays will not go to waste.

Councillor Alex Makin described the program as a terrific way to ensure that your teenagers make the most of their time off, providing them with the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people while having fun.

“The huge list of activities includes a day at The Melbourne Show, a trip to the Melbourne Zoo and the Eureka Skydeck,” said Cr Makin.

“EV’s Youth Centre will turn into a chill out zone for a day, with a portable digital dome theatre taking up EV’s. Young people will be able to lay down, eat pizza and watch films on the roof of the big blow up Cosmodome,” said Cr Makin.

“A visit to The Warrook Cattle Farm and Koala Conservation Centre at Phillip Island is also on the cards, as well a trip to the cinemas, and a game of Laser Strike will keep young people on their toes and having a great time,” said Cr Makin.

Other activities available also include splashing around at the new Croydon Leisure & Aquatic Centre and a craft workshop at Council’s Wyreena Community Arts Centre.

“Make sure you book soon as places will fill up quickly. Don’t miss out on one of the best holiday experiences this year,” said Cr Makin.

The cost for the holiday program varies between $15 to $30 per day, depending on the activity. There is a 20% discount for families experiencing financial difficulties.

For further information or to book activities, telephone Duré Morrell, Youth Programs Worker on 9298 4252. Bookings are essential.

“Maroondah is full of wonderful parks and this is a terrific way to encourage the community to enjoy the beautiful natural environment throughout Maroondah,” said Cr Makin.

Media Release: Putting the kids through the hoops

Published by Alex Makin on Wednesday 30th of May, 2007

Family members were put through the hoops - literally - at a recent Aussie Hoops basketball training session at Maroondah Indoor Sports Centre.

Councillor Alex Makin said the Aussie Hoops program is for boys and girls from five to ten years of age, but this session also had mums, dads, older siblings and grandparents out on the court too.

“The Council run program is a Basketball Australia initiative and is a fantastic learn to play program for budding basketball players. This session gave the youngsters a chance to pit their new found skills against other members of the family, with no concern for a final score,” said Cr Makin.

“The coaches tailored the lesson to allow family members to participate in all aspects - including drills, skills and mini-matches. It was great to see the children assist and interact with their family,” said Cr Makin.

Aussie Hoops is for boys and girls aged 5 to 10 years of age and is held on a Thursday after school during school terms. This skill based program is the stepping stone to the Biddy Ball program, where children put their basketball skills to use in unscored, actual games of basketball. Biddy Ball is for boys and girls aged 5 to 9 years of age and is played on a Friday after school during school terms.

For more information about basketball or netball programs at Maroondah Indoor Sports Centre please contact Council on 9298 4487, pick up a brochure from one of Council’s Customer Service Centres, or visit the website at www.maroondahleisure.com.au.

Maroondah Leader: basic skills at clinic for skaters

Published by Alex Makin on Tuesday 12th of December, 2006

The Ringwood Skatepark has been an overwhelming success and as a result Maroondah City Council is providing free skate clinics designed to teach 12 to 16 year olds the skills necessary to safety enjoy skateboarding.

Councillor Alex Makin said an accredited skateboard coach would help those looking to start skating or others wanting to brush up on the fundamentals.

“Safety is a big issue, so learning the correct stance on the board and . . . the correct way to fall and stepping off the skateboard is very important,” Cr Makin said. “Once these are mastered, then they can move onto some exciting elements such as turning, transition skills and an introduction to ollies.”

It is also imperative that all users of the Ringwood skatepark treat the surrounding community with courtesy and avoid using skateboards in areas other than the Ringwood Skatepark.

For details on the clinic contact Youth Services on 1300 882 233.
