Alex Makin is a candidate for Montague Ward in the City of Port Phillip.

Hi, I’m Alex Makin!

I’m standing for Montague Ward

in the 2024 City of Port Phillip Council elections

I am a politically independent candidate who has never been a member of a political party.

I am also the only candidate who actually lives locally in Montague Ward.

We need independent voices on Council that will listen and act on behalf of the community and not through political puppet masters.

After speaking with many people in our community, I made the decision to rung for Council because together we’ll be Making it Happen for Montague Ward:

  • Restore good governance, so we don’t have missed rubbish collections ever again.
  • Improve our off-leash dog parks, so our pets and our families can thrive.
  • Enhance community safety by improving our local streets.
  • Advocacy for better public transport throughout Fishermans Bend and Port Phillip.
  • Instill fiscal responsibility, preventing ongoing cost blowouts and project delays.
  • Strengthen sustainability, reducing Council’s environmental impact.
  • Effective planning processes to balance development with our urban character.
  • Ensure Council represents the voices of their community, rather than politics.

I have been a resident of Port Melbourne and Port Phillip for over 10 years, where I helped lead efforts to protect our dog off-leash spaces against Council’s attempts to limit our public open space.

I have also been part of community efforts to improve public transport frequencies for bus services in Fishermans Bend across Port Philip.

Back in 2010, I was one of Victoria’s youngest politically independent Mayors when I served on Maroondah City Council between 2005 and 2012. During this time, I revitalised Ringwood by creating its new urban centre and securing the much needed redevelopment of Ringwood Station.

I have also run a consulting business for over eight years and now hold management roles in the not-for-profit sector. I am also a lecturer on governance and strategy.

This experience is critical to shaping Fishermans Bend and Port Melbourne.
