Hi, I’m Alex Makin!
I’m standing for Montague Ward
in the 2024 City of Port Phillip Council elections
I am a politically independent candidate who has never been a member of a political party. My campaign is entirely self-funded so I will remain a truly independent voice focused solely on representing you in the City of Port Phillip.
I am also the only candidate who actually lives locally in Montague Ward.
We need independent voices on Council that will listen and act on behalf of the community, rather than party politics.
After speaking with many people in our community, I made the decision to run for Council because Port Phillip needs change.
Together we’ll be Making it Happen for Montague Ward:
- Ensure Council represents the voices of our community, rather than party politics.
- Restore good governance, so we don’t have missed rubbish collections ever again.
- Improve our off-leash dog parks, so our pets and our families can thrive.
- Enhance community safety by improving our local streets and supporting local businesses.
- Advocacy for better public transport throughout Fishermans Bend and Port Phillip.
- Instill fiscal responsibility, preventing ongoing cost blowouts and project delays.
- Strengthen sustainability, restoring climate leadership.
- Improve council services so they are responsive to our diverse community
- Implement effective planning processes to balance development with our urban character.
I have been a resident of Port Melbourne and Port Phillip for over 10 years, where I helped lead efforts to protect our dog off-leash spaces against Council’s attempts to limit our public open space.
I have also been part of community efforts to improve public transport frequencies for bus services in Fishermans Bend and across Port Phillip. I continue to advocate for much needed tram and rail extensions to fully realise the potential of Fishermans Bend.
Back in 2010, I was one of Victoria’s youngest politically independent Mayors when I served on Maroondah City Council between 2005 and 2012. During this time, I revitalised Ringwood by creating its new urban centre and securing the much needed redevelopment of Ringwood Station.
I ran a consulting business for over eight years and now hold management roles in the not-for-profit sector. I am also a lecturer on governance and strategy.
This experience is critical to shaping Fishermans Bend, Port Melbourne, Albert Park, South Melbourne, Southbank and the entirety of Port Phillip so we have a Council listens and acts on your concerns, rather than party politics.
