Media Release: Equipping Maroondah’s young people for the future

Year 10 students from throughout Maroondah have converged on EV’s Youth Centre this week for Council’s annual Young Leaders Program.

Mayor of Maroondah, Cr Alex Makin, said 20 students are taking part in the week-long, interactive personal development program from 3 to 7 May.

“The Young Leaders Program provides a safe and supportive environment for young people to challenge themselves and grow in self confidence during a week-long learning program,” Cr Makin said.

“The program aims to empower young people to participate more confidently and effectively in their school and community by assisting them to develop and refine their skill and knowledge in regards to leadership, communication, participation, group dynamics, decision making, public speaking, assertiveness and conflict resolution,” Cr Makin said.

Cr Makin said a second phase to the Young Leaders Program would again be held in 2010.

“The success of the pilot of last year’s Community Action Project (CAP) meant it was an easy decision to include it again in 2010,” Cr Makin said.

“The CAP will open the door to selected Young Leaders Program participants to take part in a 12-week community-oriented project where they will address the needs of young people in Maroondah. This will begin shortly after the Young Leaders Program,” Cr Makin said.

Last year, CAP participants produced a short film on bullying and ran workshops with younger students about bullying.

Croydon RSL Anzac March

Both the Croydon and Ringwood RSLs hold a march on the Sunday prior to Anzac Day. While iI previously attended the march in Ringwood, this year I decided to participate in Croydon’s march, as I am planning to attend the Dawn Service in Ringwood.

The march began on the corner of Hewish Road and Main Street in Croydon and was a genuine community event, with many participants either joining in the march or watching from the footpaths.

The march proceeded though Mount Dandenong Road and onto James Stevens Memorial Lawn at Civic Square in Croydon. The service included participation from the local schools and it was encouraging to see such a strong community atmosphere with the event.

As the Mayor of Maroondah I was invited to welcome the guests and to offer our respect to the many service men and women who have served this country.

The speech is included within this post:

Good afternoon and welcome here today on behalf on Maroondah City Council. This Anzac service enables us to remember the contribution of Australian soldiers and is an important reminder of Australia’s involvement in conflicts around the world.

Australian servicemen and women have made vital contributions to many conflicts and it is important that the community does not forget or discount this important aspect of our shared history.

ANZAC Day also offers families of servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country an opportunity to recognise and remember that contribution.

It is heartening to see the strong community participation within today’s service and I would like to give thanks to the many people that support RSLs and organisations that preserve the memories of our fallen servicemen and women, and also to provide support for veterans and their families.

The Maroondah community gives thanks for the service of our fellow countrymen and women, and commits to preserve their memory forever.

Lest We Forget.

HE Parker Reserve – Tennis Club Lighting

HE Parker Reserve located at the end of Heathmont Road in Heathmont is a major sporting facility within Maroondah and is home to Football, Cricket, Netball and Tennis.

This afternoon I launched the lighting upgrade for HE Parker Reserve Tennis Club, a project that was collaboratively funded through Maroondah City Council, the State Government and the tennis club.

The lights for the tennis courts means that the club is able to play night matches, extending the club’s ability to hold tennis sessions into the evening and thus assisting in further growing its membership.

Media Release: Key health and wellbeing plan unveiled

The City of Maroondah is preparing to unveil a high-level strategic plan that will guide Council’s promotion of a healthy, happy municipality over the next four years.

The 2009-2013 Maroondah Community Wellbeing Plan is underpinned by extensive community consultation and a comprehensive research report, which provided the basis for its six health and wellbeing priorities – healthy minds, healthy choices; engaged, resilient communities; accessible, safe communities; lifestyle opportunities to support health and wellbeing; targeting equity and social inclusion; and healthy, sustainable environments.

Mayor of Maroondah, Cr Alex Makin, said the plan included six action plans with specific objectives and strategies to support each of the priorities.

“The Maroondah Community Wellbeing Plan will be implemented by Council in partnership with the community, local agencies and the State Government,” Cr Makin said.

“The plan aims to work towards an optimal state of health and wellbeing for the Maroondah community by addressing issues impacting on the entire municipality. The plan will also address issues related to social and economic disadvantage that result in poor health outcomes for particular groups in our community,” Cr Makin said.

The former Maroondah Partners in Health, Safety and Community Wellbeing Committee (now retired) was responsible for the plan’s development and setting its strategic direction. Maroondah’s new Community Wellbeing Committee will oversee the plan’s implementation.

“The Maroondah Community Wellbeing plan is a significant strategic document and we are confident that, with the involvement and support of our community and partners, we will nurture and develop the health and wellbeing of the Maroondah community well into the future,” Cr Makin said.

Cr Makin will launch the 2009-2013 Maroondah Community Wellbeing Plan on Monday 19 April at the Karralyka Centre in Mines Road, Ringwood East.

VicHealth Social Connection, Economic Participation and Workforce Development Manager Irene Verins will cover the topic of social inclusion and health during the keynote speech of the launch.

Copies of the plan will be available at Council Service Centres or online at www.maroondah.vic.gov.au after Monday 19 April.

Maroondah Journal: Right off the bat, extra cash for reserve

Heathmont Reserve is home to the Heathmont Baseball Club, Heathmont Baptist Cricket Club and Gujarati Association Cricket Club and will receive $821,000 to build two new changerooms, a kitchen, a viewing area and accessibility improvements for people with a disability.

The project while largely funded through Maroondah City Council, will receive $240,000 from the Federal Government through the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

Maroondah Mayor Alex Makin confirmed a $575,000 commitment from the council to make the project a reality.  Cr Makin said the works would make the reserve more inclusive and accessible to the wider community.

“What this translates into for the community is the development of a multi-purpose facility that will help expand social and sports participation for families, female teams and people with a disability.”

The contribution of Federal funding demonstrates the partnerships that can be developed when several levels of government work together for the benefit of the community.

International Women’s Day Breakfast – 2010 Year of the Girl Guides

International Women’s Day began in Europe and the United State in the early 1900s, whereby women were campaigning for equal wages, status and the right to vote. The event is also recognised by the United Nations, in realisation that peace and social progress requires active participation and equality of women.

Maroondah celebrates International Women’s Day with a breakfast held at the Karralyka Centre to reflect on the contribution women make to their workplaces, families and communities.

This year the Maroondah International Women’s Day celebrations commemorated the Centenary of Girl Guides, with two speakers from Guides Victoria.

Ringwood Cricket Club – Cricket Victoria and the Boxing Day Test

The Ringwood Cricket Club, based at Jubilee Park in Ringwood, participates in the Ringwood and District Association and has four sides in Victorian Premier Cricket, where they won back-to-back premierships in 2008 and 2009.

Today I was invited to day two of the Boxing Day Test as a guest of the Ringwood Cricket Club. The event included a function hosted by Cricket Victoria, which administers Victorian Premier Cricket and provides a pathway for outstanding players to represent Victoria.

Cricket Victoria and the Ringwood District Club have an emphasis on increasing participation in sport and in particular encouraging women’s cricket. Ringwood Cricket Club is currently in discussions with Council over the facilities required to initiate a Premier women’s cricket side for Ringwood and the region.

Stuff Your Stereo Events – 2009 FReeZA Graduation

One of the many activities organised through the EVs Youth Centre is the FReeZA program, which involves young people in organising musical events throughout the year.

Each year the FReeZA group choosing a name for itself and and plans a range of drug, smoke and alcohol free musical events. This year’s group was known as Stuff Your Stereo Events and included a number of innovative activities, including the fostering of a partnership with the southeast FReeZA network to provide a concert in support of young people affected by the bushfires earlier this year.

As the Mayor of Maroondah I was invited to speak at the graduation event for the FReeZA participants:

In the spirit of Reconciliation, we acknowledge that we are meeting on land for which the Wurundjeri people have been custodians for many centuries, and on land which the Indigenous Australians have performed age old ceremonies.

We, Maroondah City Council, accept, respect and have shared with the Wurundjeri people in their customs of welcome.

The Wurundjeri people support the coming together of all people, respecting their individuality to focus on a unified and cohesive nation.

Tonight’s graduation of the participants within Stuff Your Stereo Events, highlights the respect and individuality identified within the Acknowledgement of Country.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all and thank you for coming along tonight to celebrate the achievements of these remarkable young people.

The Maroondah FReeZA Group is a personal development program for young people aged 15-21 years of age and focuses on personal and professional skills through the organisation of all ages live music events.

I would like to congratulate each of the participants of Stuff Your Stereo Events who organised 11 all-ages music events over the course of this year. It was particularly impressive to see the group work in collaboration with other organisations, by providing a concert in support of young people affected by the Black Saturday fires.

Likewise, Stuff Your Stereo Events was instrumental in organising a Battle of the Bands to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Croydon Town Hall, the building that now contains EVs Youth Centre.

As you have heard from the participants, the Maroondah FReeZA Program is designed to give young people a practical learning experience & personal development through the organisation and facilitation of live music events.

Each of these young people here tonight have excelled in demonstrating effective communication skills, group processes, public speaking, assertiveness, decision-making, budgeting, writing press releases, stage managing and a range of life-skills. They have also developed specialised skills in the music industry such as how to operate a PA system, sound and acoustics, and lighting systems.

I recognise that the program is a huge commitment and I thank parents, families and friends for encouraging the young people throughout their participation, and for your support.

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Council’s Youth Services Team who have worked hard to deliver such a high quality program, I encourage each of the participants to remain involved with EVs and take part in the range of activities that are delivered throughout the year.

Congratulations to each of the Stuff Your Stereo Events participants on their achievements and thank you on behalf of the Maroondah community.
