Media Release: Do you have a few hours to spare?

Maroondah City Council has issued an urgent call for volunteers:

Do you have a few hours to spare?

WANTED: Enthusiastic Maroondah residents with a few spare hours a week to undertake a vital community project. Job satisfaction guaranteed!

If this sounds like you, Maroondah City Council would like to hear from you!

Councillor Alex Makin is keen for local people to discover the ‘job satisfaction’ of being a volunteer while helping others in the Maroondah community.

“We have a group of older ladies who rely on Council’s 12 seater bus to get them to a regular exercise class at the Ringwood Aquatic Centre. However, we are in urgent need of one or more volunteers who can drive the bus each Monday for a couple of hours to get them to and from this invaluable program,” said Cr Makin.

If you are able to offer your time for this volunteer role, you would need a current valid Victorian Drivers’ licence and undergo a practice drive of the 12 seater bus.

“Additionally, Council’s Meals on Wheels service and Social Support program are always on the look out for volunteers,” said Cr Makin.

“The Meals on Wheels program is more than just delivering meals. Our wonderful volunteers also provide much needed social contact for the recipients, spending time talking, catching up on news, sharing stories and building ongoing relationships. This crucial social contact decreases isolation and assists in monitoring the health and well being of our older residents,” said Cr Makin.

“Council’s Social Support program assists a number of older residents who rely on the support of a team of friendly volunteers every fortnight to access their local shops or library. The trips are conducted in small groups to encourage friendships for residents who have limited access to social opportunities,” said Cr Makin.

Volunteers are urgently needed to continue both of these valuable programs.

“Volunteering is very rewarding work and very flexible! If you can spare a few hours a week, fortnight or month I would strongly encourage you to contact Council and find out more about how you can get involved,” said Cr Makin.

So why not become a volunteer and help others in your local area, meet new people and discover the joy that comes from giving something back to the community?
