The Port Phillip Mussel and Jazz Festival has been a fixture of South Melbourne Market over the March long weekend for the past ten years. The two day festival incorporates street vendors along Cecil Street, alongside market traders and a stage featuring jazz performances.
With an estimated crowd of over 50,000 attendees, South Melbourne Market partnered with The Nature Conservancy to recycle all mussel, oyster and scallop shells to protect Port Phillip Bay’s ecosystems as part of a reef restoration project.
The Festival builds an ongoing tradition of seafood beginning with First Nations people. The City of Port Phillip respectfully acknowledges those who came before us, the Traditional Owners of this land, the people of the Kulin Nation who wand pays our respect to their Elders, past and present, and acknowledge and uphold their continuing relationship to this land.
Also included is an extensive two-day music program, featuring some of Melbourne’s favourite soul and jazz acts, such as Margie Lou Dyer, Miss Lizzy and the Night Owls and The Shuffle Club.
The Market’s 150 independent retailers provide some of the best product, fashion and merchandise within Melbourne. Support the Traders who sustain the iconic South Melbourne Market, by not only enjoying the Port Philip Mussel and Jazz Festival, but by shopping at the Market on an ongoing basis.
