Port Phillip Men’s Shed: Open Day and Magazine Launch

The Port Phillip Men’s Shed Association, located in South Melbourne, is a community organisation providing woodworking, metalworking and gardening for its members to become involved in community projects or develop individual items of interest.

Despite the name, membership to the Men’s Shed is open to people of all genders and it was fantastic to see so many members present this afternoon, including some of the original founders.

I was invited to the Open Day afternoon to launch the Port Phillip Men’s Shed magazine, which included content on the Association’s key achievements such as its first production of honey and expanding membership.

Within the launch I highlighted the significance of the Men Shed’s community focus and the likelihood of increased interest due to urban densification. New housing within Port Phillip, particularly areas like Fishermans Bend, often lack space for garages or workshops, meaning organisations like the Men’s Shed will provide the only opportunities for people to be involved in activities like woodworking or metalworking.

One of my priorities is for Council to undertake a Social and Community Infrastructure Plan, which will assess current community spaces, identify current needs as well as future requirements and provide a plan to address to address the identified gap.

Undertaking this Plan will assist Council in finding and developing the spaces required for our community, such as Makers Spaces similar to those available within Docklands and Carlton.
