Tobruk House, located in Albert Park, is home of the Victorian Branch of The Rats of Tobruk Association, providing a lasting tribute to the approximately 14,000 Australians that defended Tobruk against the Axis Siege in World War II.
This afternoon the Association held its commemorative service at the community garden in Moubray Street marking the 84th anniversary of the siege of Tobruk. I formed part of the City of Port Phillip delegation joining Deputy Mayor Bryan Mears and Rod Hardy the Ward Councillor for Albert Park.
The service incorporated guest speech by Major General Professor Rosenfeld AC, OBE KstJ who shared his journey as a surgeon in the defence forces, as well as retelling the stories of medical personnel tending to the soldiers who defended Tobruk against siege for over five months.
The service continued at Tobruk House, hosted by the volunteers through the Rats of Tobruk Assocation, many of whom are descended from the Rats of Tobruk.
