2007 in review: standing up for the community

As we enter the final year of this current council term, it is important to reflect on the last twelve months so as to shape the priorities for 2008:

Improving Accessibility

Improving Sustainability

Advocating for Sustainable Transport

Standing up for the community

Over the course of this year I plan on continuing to stand up for the community, including through my involvement in the Committees of Management for the Maroondah Citizens’ Advice Bureau and North Ringwood Community House. I am also Maroondah’s representative on the Eastern Transport Coalition and am continuing my involvement to the Maroondah Tourism and Heritage Advisory Board. I should also be continuing as chair of the Maroondah Partners in Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee, although this will be dependent on the outcome of the notice to review that I issued for February’s council meeting.

It is critical that Maroondah becomes a leader in sustainability and accessibility. The vision for the Ringwood Transit City and Croydon Activity Centre will result in changes that will remain with us for at least 20 or 30 years. It is imperative that we get things right from the very beginning, so as not to repeat past mistakes.

I would like to thank the many people who have contacted me during 2007 to discuss issues within Maroondah. It is your calls and emails that provide me the opportunity to stand up for the community.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make Maroondah a better municipality throughout 2007.

Cr. Alex Makin

Councillor for Loughnan’s Hill Ward
City of Maroondah

Maroondah Journal: Back to an outdoor dip at the Croydon pool this summer

Works are progressing on schedule for the Croydon Memorial Pool, meaning that it will be reopened in time for the summer season from the 24th of November. The Maroondah Journal has reported on this progress and the expected reopening of the facility:

Cr Alex Makin said the pool would be open in time to coincide with Water Safety Week. “The liner secures the life of the pool for another 15 years. We now need to work on the promotional side of the pool to draw people back”.

Maroondah Council is preparing 40,000 brochures to be distributed to houses within Maroondah advertising the reopening of the facility and the events planned to coincide with water safety week – including a 25% discount for family passes.

SCOOP Meeting – progress update on Croydon Pool

Save Croydon Outdoor Olympic Pool (SCOOP), is a local action group that was formed in response to the uncertainty that was surrounding the Croydon Outdoor Memorial Pool. This evening SCOOP held a meeting to provide an update on the status of Croydon Pool.

Works are progressing on the repair work that is necessary to allow the reopening of the pool in time for the November swimming season this year. These works will largely resolve the ongoing leaking issues that existed and will guarantee the life of the pool for another ten years.

These works will mean that the Croydon Pool will be able to reopen for this year’s Summer season and will provide an opportunity to undertake further works to enhance the existing facility in coming years.

Maroondah Journal: Pool: state dips in

The announcement of State Government funding for the Croydon Memorial Pool has been covered by the Maroondah Journal:

Maroondah councillor Alex Makin called it a “fantastic announcement. It is great to see rally and the State Government honour their commitment.”

The State Government has honoured its election commitment to provide $250,000 to help rectify the leaks that forced the closure of the Croydon Memorial Pool back in January. Combined with funding from Maroondah Council, the pool should be reopened by next season, allowing the retention of this unique Croydon facility.

Maroondah Journal: Preserve pool

The Maroondah Journal has reported on the successful march and the show of support by the community in seeking to retain and upgrade the Croydon Memorial Pool.

Maroondah councillors Jo-anne Taylor and Alex Makin attended the march, expressing their hopes of seeing a new facility built on the site.

Cr Makin said the pool had reached a new chapter.

While Maroondah Council has resolved to retain the outdoor pool, there is still the need to solicit the funding necessary to ensure that that much needed upgrades are provided.

“To me the issue of the Croydon pool is also about governance as it as about listening to the community and respecting the results of a petition with 11,000 signatories.”

The Maroondah community has clearly expressed its desire for the retention of the outdoor pool and it is imperative that the Council reflects this view.

“While the council has resolved to save the pool, steps still need to be taken to secure funding to upgrade and enhance the pool.”

The immediate priority includes repairs to the return channel to prevent leaks from the pool, as well as resolving a number of potential occupational health and safety issues. The prioritisation of these items should allow for the pool to be operational while funding is sourced for a comprehensive upgrade.

I would like to once again SCOOP on organising the march and for the continued vigilance over the Croydon Pool.

March for Croydon Pool

This afternoon I participated in a public rally organised by the Save Croydon Olympic Outdoor Pool (SCOOP) group, which was used to demonstrate the ongoing public support that exists to save the Croydon Memorial Pool.

As one of the councillors that voted to retain the Croydon Memorial Pool I was invited to speak to reiterate my support for the facility and to discuss the next steps in the campaign. My speech was as follows:

I would like to thank everyone for showing your support for the retention of the Croydon Outdoor Pool. I would like to groups such as SCOOP and the Croydon Conservation Society for their support and dialogue both before I was on council and since being elected from November 2005. This ongoing momentum was invaluable in maintaining the community pressure to ensure the saving of the Croydon pool.

To me the issue of retaining the Croydon Pool is as much about governance as it is about listening to the community and respecting the results of a petition with 11,000 signatories. It is therefore important that you and the wider community continue to show your support for the pool as further steps still need to be taken.

This is the start of a new chapter, while Council has resolved to save the pool, steps still need to be taken to secure funding to upgrade and enhance the pool. It is crucial that the community continues to show its support for the Croydon outdoor pool and I wish everyone well as we continue to support this unique Croydon icon.
