Funding announcement for Heathmont Reserve

Heathmont Reserve, located in Waterloo Street, Heathmont, is home to the Heathmont Baseball Club. The Club was formed in 1969 and provides Junior and Senior Teams which compete in the Victorian Winter Baseball League.

The Clubrooms and facilities are in need of an upgrade and Council has contributed $575,000 towards their redevelopment.  This morning I was joined by Mike Symon, MP for Deakin, who contributed $246,000 from the Federal Government.

Combined, this funding will ensure a much needed upgrade of the clubrooms, ensuring that the Club is able to provide modern and convenient facilities for its members.

Delegates’ Report: Environmental Sustainability and Achievements by People with Disabilities

On the 23rd of August I attended the launch of the North Ringwood Tennis Club’s water sustainability project. The club, through a combination of Federal and Council grants, has installed water tanks to assist the watering of its courts and reduce dependence on our limited water supplies.

Like many of our sporting clubs, North Ringwood Tennis Club is committed to environmental sustainability and it was great to hear their members discussing the ongoing need for sustainability, including the investigation of potential energy conservation projects.

I commend the club for its ongoing foresight and commitment to sustainability.

I attended the Ringwood Spiders Trophy Presentation Night on the 28th of August.

The atmosphere was understandably jubilant given the strong success of the team, including winning the Premiership Cup for the first time in 14 years, with the club already planning for next year’s season. Each year the number of attendees at the Ringwood Spiders Trophy Presentation Night increases, so much so that they had outgrown the clubrooms at Jubilee Park and instead held their function at the Ringwood Bowls Club.

With the football season drawing to a close, the Ringwood Spiders are preparing a range of off-season activities, including partnerships with other sporting clubs such as the Ringwood Bowls Club.

The Ringwood Spiders demonstrates what can be achieved within our community and it is fantastic to see the ongoing partnerships that have been formed within the Club, including the Ringwood Redbacks, the Ringwood Bowls Club and businesses such as Lakeside Cafe.

Lastly, this morning I attended a combined meeting of Scoot Wheel n Move and the Maroondah Disability Action Group. The two groups are both focused on accessibility, with Scoot Wheel n Move having a particular interest on mobility aids and the Disability Action Group focusing on advocacy.

This morning the groups were at a joint meeting to hear Bill Shorten, the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children Services, who attended the meeting at the request of the Disability Action Group.

It is quite an achievement for any community group to secure the presence of a senior Government Member and it is great to see an example of a community group advocating on behalf of its community.

The discussion this morning was productive and I commend the two groups for their advocacy within the community.

Maroondah Homebiz – the Art of Networking

Maroondah Homebiz is an organisation that aims to assist small and home-based businesses within Maroondah.

Tonight’s meeting featured Jen Harwood, a business coach and the author of the Art of Networking. Jen discussed the importance of networking in attracting new clients and the need to cultivate ongoing business relationships.

Jen spoke about a number of techniques to network effectively, including finding events targeted by prospective clients and promptly following up discussions.

Maroondah Homebiz, through grant funding received from the Maroondah Business Grants, will be holding regular sessions with speakers designed to educate and inform.

Meeting the Skylarkers

This afternoon I met the Skylarkers, a group of older residents who bring music, song and laughter to elderly citizens. The Skylarkers are a voluntary entertainment group that performs at retirement villages, nursing homes and senior citizen centres.

The Skylarkers received a Maroondah community grants to fund costumes to assist the group’s performances. The group rehearses at the Heathmont Uniting Church at 83 Canterbury Road and has already booked shows for most of next year.

The Skylarkers always welcome new talent so for contact details please email glenchandler@bigpond.com

Delegates' Report: celebrating our history, supporting our sporting clubs, cultural events, volunteers and community houses

On the 23rd of September I attended the Ringwood Historical Society’s AGM. The Society meets each month at Federation Estate with the aim of preserving our heritage for the future. The society has developed extensive archives over its 50 year history and is one of the oldest historical society’s within the eastern suburbs.

In fact the Ringwood Historical Society celebrates its 50th birthday this month and I encourage the community to attend its 50th birthday celebrations on the 28th of October from 8pm at Federation Estate.

On the 26th of September I attended the Ringwood Bowls Club Season Launch. The occasion marked the beginning of the bowls season and also coincided with their water sustainability project.

Ringwood Bowls Club has been part of Ringwood’s history since 1929 and its current membership and executive are determined to ensure that it has a sustainable future. The bowls club has embarked on a project to install water tanks and rainwater retention systems to water its two grass greens. The club is in fact the first bowling green to retrofit its facilities for water sustainability.

It was encouraging to see all levels of government work together to achieve this outcome. A combination of Federal, State and council grants have assisted in providing the funding for this project to be undertaken. I congratulate the club on its foresight and its commitment to a sustainable future.

From the 3rd to the 5th of October I attended a number of events as part of the Maroondah Writers and Readers Festival. As some of you may recall, I’ve spoken previously about the Festival steering committee, and as a member of this committee it was great to see the positive public reception and involvement in the festival. We had a steering committee meeting this morning and Eastern Regional Libraries, as well as the community members were all amazed at the success of this inaugural event. Next year the festival will probably comprise of a series of events to cover a range of writing genres and to build on some of the community partnerships that were formed during this event. I am sure that details will be forthcoming once they are available and the events are organised.

I would like to thank the many people that attended events during the weekend and also to the hardworking people that were involved in preparing and organising the festival.

On the 8th of October I attended the Eastern Volunteers AGM with Cr. Jo-anne Taylor. Eastern Volunteers provides volunteer recruitment and transport services for the frail aged and people with disabilities. Eastern Volunteers is based in Ringwood and it is amazing to see how much they have grown since their inception in 1976. The organisation is currently renting a premises in New Street, Ringwood and its current priority is to purchase accommodation that will ensure it has a sustainable future in the longer-term.

Eastern Volunteers has established a building fund to assist with this project and will be embarking on a process to raise the funds necessary. All donations made to the Building Fund are tax deductible.

On the 10th of October I had the pleasure of opening Enjoying Planned Retirement’s annual Art and Craft Festival, along with Cr. Jo-anne Taylor. The festival, now its third year, provides an appropriate conclusion to the Maroondah Seniors Festival, as it is celebrates the many talents of Marondah’s seniors. EPR is an incredibly active organisation and the support and activities they provide for members is amazing.

Lastly, this morning and at quite a few times over the past month I have met with North Ringwood Community House to assist in their grant application for funding into a feasibility study to identify a new location for the services the community house provides. I am pleased to say that work on the application is advancing rapidly and we will be submitting the application to State Government shortly.

Community houses facilitate social connectedness and North Ringwood Community House, as a Registered Training Organisation also provides TAFE accredited courses to assist in providing new skills for the community. The house after 30 years has outgrown its current location and premises and this grant will begin the process in finding a new site.

I would like to thank the staff members who have assisted in the house with information and also to Cr. Jo-anne Taylor for writing a letter of support for this application.

Media Release: Ringwood Athletics Track ready for new season

Little Athletics is a uniquely Australian sport for children from 5 to 16 years. As the name suggests, it is based upon the sport of athletics (track and field) and offers a wide range of events from running, jumping, throwing and walking, each modified to suit the age and ability of the children.

Maroondah has two athletic centres: at Town Park on the corner of Norton and Mt Dandenong Roads in Croydon; and the AC Robertson Track, Sylvia Grove, Ringwood.

“The Little Athletics season commences on Saturday 4 October at 8.30am, and families new to Little Athletics are welcome to come along to either centre and discover the benefits of participation. Registration will still be available on this day,” said Cr Makin.

The registration date for the Ringwood Little Athletic Track and Field Season is Saturday 20 September between 9.30am and 11am at the AC Robertson Athletics Track, Sylvia Grove, Ringwood.

Media Release: New Community House a Priority

Alex Makin, the Councillor for Loughnan’s Hill Ward, has declared his support for a new home for North Ringwood Community House and pledged to work with the house to make the vision a reality.

“The Ringwood North community deserve the same standard of facilities that exist in other suburbs of Maroondah”, Cr. Makin said. “It is critical that the community rallies behind this project to demonstrate the importance local residents hold for their community house.”

North Ringwood Community House is situated at the rear of the Holy Spirit Parish at 120 Oban Road, North Ringwood. The building was a gift from a local family and the parish kindly provided the land. North Ringwood Community House is the only community house in Maroondah that does not reside on council land.

“Community houses that are located on council land are eligible for capital works funding through council grants”, Cr. Makin said. “Since North Ringwood Community House does not reside on council land, the house is unable to expand to meet the growing needs of the community.”

“This is a major project but the sooner we start, the sooner we will see a new community heart for Ringwood North. I offer my complete support to North Ringwood Community House so we can make this vision a reality”, Cr. Makin concluded.

About Alex Makin:
Alex Makin was elected in November 2005 as the Councillor for Loughnan’s Hill ward in the City of Maroondah. Alex is focused on improving the accessibility and sustainability of Maroondah and has a keen interest in public transport, planning and community engagement.

MS Support Group Exhibition

The morning the MS Support Group launched its art exhibition at Maroondah Federation Estate. The exhibition featured prints and paintings from its members and provided an opportunity to showcase the support provided by MS Support Groups.

Like the exhibition organised by the Croydon Stroke Support Group, this exhibition received grant funding from Maroondah City Council and provided an opportunity to demonstrate the breadth of talent that exists within these support groups.

Support groups, such as these provide friendship, support and an opportunity to strengthen participation within our society, it is critical that as a council we support these groups to prevent the onset of social isolation.
