Media Release: Get your skates on and head to Ringwood Skate Park

Maroondah City Council is encouraging young people who enjoy skateboarding to get their skates on — and enter the South Eastern League of Skateboarding being held at Ringwood Skate Park on Saturday 12 April.

Councillor Alex Makin said Maroondah is hosting the eighth heat of the skateboarding event, which is in it’s second year of running.

“Skateboarders and families are invited to come along to Ringwood Skate Park and join in on the action or sit back and relax,” said Cr Makin.

“Ringwood Skate Park is a fantastic facility within Maroondah and it is great to be able to support the sport of Skateboarding by holding these events,” said Cr Makin.

“This competition is an opportunity for young people who enjoy keeping active by skateboarding to showcase their skills in a recognised competition,” said Cr Makin. “The competition has various age divisions including 12 and under, 16 and under, Open Male and Open Female.”

“So come along and support the young skateboarders of the community in an event which is sure to attract some of the most talented skateboarders within the area,” concluded Cr Makin.

Heat Eight of the South Eastern Skateboarding League will begin at 12.30 on Saturday 12 April at Ringwood Skate Park, Seymour St Ringwood.

First Maroondah Partners in Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee for 2008

The Maroondah Partners in Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee has resumed for 2008 and provides an opportunity to discuss projects that will enhance life within Maroondah.

Items discussed this morning included the Bayswater North Renewal Project and the cooperation that exists between Victoria Police and Connex to prevent rock throwing incidents from occurring. Council’s education and support for newly arrived migrants was also discussed and there are plans to extend this program so that it includes knowledge about public transport. Council will be seeking cooperation with Metlink, Connex and bus operators, such as Invicta, to assist in this project.

Safety around Ringwood was also discussed and the Police will be regularly patrolling the area. Council’s youth services team will also be working with younger people to improve the amenity around the Ringwood Skatepark.

The committee adopted a recommendation calling on council to pursue the Federal Government over funding for security cameras around Ringwood. A federal election promise was made by the former Federal Member for Deakin and I do hope that the new member will commit to the installation of cameras to improve the safety of central Ringwood.

Maroondah Journal: Safety boost as police push for cameras in Ringwood

The Maroondah Journal has reported on a Ringwood Police initiative to see live security cameras installed within the centre of Ringwood. This proposal is similar to the cameras that have been installed at Lilydale, which has seen a 70 percent reduction in crime.

Public Transport Users Association spokesman Alex Makin said the cameras “were certainly a good idea. Statistics in Lilydale has showed how it has deterred crime.”

The Ringwood Police are planning to request four cameras which will monitor the station, the nightclub precinct and the Ringwood Skatepark. Funding for the proposal, similarily to Lilydale, would be dependent on a successful grant from the Federal Government.

Maroondah Leader: basic skills at clinic for skaters

The Ringwood Skatepark has been an overwhelming success and as a result Maroondah City Council is providing free skate clinics designed to teach 12 to 16 year olds the skills necessary to safety enjoy skateboarding.

Councillor Alex Makin said an accredited skateboard coach would help those looking to start skating or others wanting to brush up on the fundamentals.

“Safety is a big issue, so learning the correct stance on the board and . . . the correct way to fall and stepping off the skateboard is very important,” Cr Makin said. “Once these are mastered, then they can move onto some exciting elements such as turning, transition skills and an introduction to ollies.”

It is also imperative that all users of the Ringwood skatepark treat the surrounding community with courtesy and avoid using skateboards in areas other than the Ringwood Skatepark.
