Media Release: North Ringwood Community House Feasibility Study to Commence

Alex Makin, the Councillor for the Mullum Ward is delighted that funding for the feasibility study into a new location for North Ringwood Community House (NRCH) will commence following a successful grant application from the State Government.

“I congratulate the State Government for approving the community house’s application for $25,000 to commence the feasibility study”, Cr. Alex Makin said. “This funding, combined with the $5000 contribution from Maroondah City Council will enable the house to begin planning for a new location and a sustainable future.”

North Ringwood Community House, located at 120 Oban Road, Ringwood North, is the only community house in Maroondah that is not situated on Council land. This hampers the ability of the house to access capital works funding, resulting in an ongoing maintenance backlog. North Ringwood Community House is the only community house in Maroondah that has obtained status as a Registered Training Organisation and provides TAFE accredited courses, as well as subjects on computers, arts, languages and fitness.

“North Ringwood Community House provides an essential service for the community through encouraging social inclusion and delivering lifelong education. The announcement of this successful application means that the vision of a new community centre for Ringwood North is now one step closer to reality. I look forward to continuing my involvement with the house as we work together to make this vision a reality” Cr. Makin concluded.

Joulle Calisthenic Academy 2008 Concert

This afternoon I attended Joulle Calisthenic’s sxith annual concert, held at the George Wood Performing Arts Centre. Joulle was established in 2002 and was derived from “joule” to reflect the work, energy and strength required to perform calisthenics.

Joulle has a number of divisions with participants ranging in ages from three to over 26 and after its first year of inception in 2002, it was already launching teams in all divisions. Over this time Joulle has grown from 48 members to over 100 who participate in the dancing, gymnastics, singing and marching that forms calisthenics.

Today’s concert showcased all of Joulle’s divisions and a number of their award winning routines. Joulle has won a number of competitions and its seniors section is currently placed in first division. The enthusiasm and skill that was evident within the performances reflects Joulle’s commitment to building self esteem and confidence in an environment that fosters fun, fitness and friendship.

Media Release: Enjoy a walk to fitness

During the month of October, Maroondah City Council is encouraging the community to get out and get active during the annual Walking to Fitness month.

Councillor Alex Makin said this initiative targets all Maroondah residents, providing a calendar of walks throughout the month that caters for a wide range of interests and capabilities.

“A range of different walks are on offer throughout the month, including pram walks, bush walks, historical walks, and all-abilities walks,” said Cr Makin.

“Walking is a safe, cheap and easy way to get exercise and a great way to get to know members of your local community as well as the Maroondah area,” said Cr Makin.

People who walk regularly tend to feel more confident, happy and relaxed. They also control their weight better, have stronger bones and greater flexibility, have lower blood pressure and reduce the risk factors for developing heart disease and diabetes.

Copies of the schedule of walks can be obtained from Council’s Service Centres or Ringwood and Croydon libraries.

The schedule of walks can also be found online at Council’s website www.maroondah.vic.gov.au

“If you’d like to explore Maroondah further on foot or by bicycle, then there are two booklets, produced by Council, that offer plenty of suggestions and advice,” said Cr Makin.

Maroondah’s Parks and Paths brochure has a large scale map detailing walking and cycling paths throughout the city, with information on parks and facilities along the way.

Maroondah’s Walks and Trails brochure has information on twelve specific walks and trails throughout the city, providing information on level of difficulty, access, distance and time, as well as facilities and detailed walking maps.

Both brochures are available from Council’s Service Centres or call Council on 1300 88 22 33 or visit www.maroondah.vic.gov.au.

Media Release: Happy feet are active feet

As part of Active Transport Day on Tuesday 16 October, Maroondah City Council staff have cast aside their cars and will either ride or walk to work.

Councillor Alex Makin is an advocate for sustainable transport, including walking and using public transport.

“Active Transport Day is a combination of the former National Ride to Work and Walk to Work days. The Day encourages people to give the car a break and consider cycling, walking or using public transport to travel to and from work or other engagements,” said Cr Makin.

“The intention is to open up our minds to the possibility of alternate means of transport, reducing our dependency on the motor car and creating long term sustainable change,” said Cr Makin.

“Over 50 Council staff, along with many people within our community, will be participating in this day, with fifteen Council staff riding to work and 9 walking to work,” said Cr Makin.

“The remaining Council staff will participate in two lunchtime walks, the first around Ringwood Lake, and the second along the Mullum Mullum Creek Trail,” said Cr Makin.

“Walking is widely acknowledged as being one of the best activities to improve health and well-being, it’s a great way to exercise while enjoying the scenery,” said Cr Makin.

More information on making active transport part of your day to day life can be found at www.goforyourlife.vic.gov.au.

SCOOP Meeting – progress update on Croydon Pool

Save Croydon Outdoor Olympic Pool (SCOOP), is a local action group that was formed in response to the uncertainty that was surrounding the Croydon Outdoor Memorial Pool. This evening SCOOP held a meeting to provide an update on the status of Croydon Pool.

Works are progressing on the repair work that is necessary to allow the reopening of the pool in time for the November swimming season this year. These works will largely resolve the ongoing leaking issues that existed and will guarantee the life of the pool for another ten years.

These works will mean that the Croydon Pool will be able to reopen for this year’s Summer season and will provide an opportunity to undertake further works to enhance the existing facility in coming years.
